What lens would you recommend for low light and portrait photography (Nikon D90)?

If you don't have your heart set on a zoom lens, I absolutely recommend a fixed lens (primes lens). 50mm? The aperture has a significantly wider setting then a zoom lens which allows more light at a lower setting. Also, they are fantastic for portraits.
