As her mother do I have more rights on my child's surname when registering her?

My ex-boyfriend has a horrible surname, its not british and has loooads of letters, i have a double barrel surname and he says he either wants our daughter to have his surname or join ours together to make a Triple barrel surname! We are not together and he doesn't help with child care or financial support so why should he have rights over her name? he says at the registry office he will not allow her to have my surname on the birth certificate! but i feel it should be my decision as it will be me she grows up with and lives with when i get married and have more children, why should she feel left out with this horrible name?
