English Springer Spaniel and AKC events question?

My family and I got an English Springer Spaniel puppy a couple months ago and got him AKC registered. Dad wants to get him neutered, but mom heard if we get him neutered he can't compete in AKC events like agility or rally, which is what we we're considering for him. Is that true? Or would it be OK to go ahead and neuter him?
